Welcome to the neighborhood!

Evershagen is a beautiful part of Rostock with great connections to the public transport system, many playgrounds and lovely parks. During the time of the German Democratic Republic (DDR) this former village developed into a lively neighborhood of industrialized apartment blocks, but experienced a drastic decline in population after the German reunification. By now it is back to about 17,000 inhabitants of all classes. Two of these inhabitants are Gerrit and Jorine van Dijk who moved from the Netherlands to Evershagen in 2015. Together with their neighbors they want to improve their community and neighborhood. For this purpose, they also work with local institutions in order to support and strengthen ongoing projects.

Gerrit and Jorine van Dijk

Gerrit studied Theology in Ede. After working in the furniture sector for several years, he moved to Rostock with his wife Jorine to work for the Free Evangelical Church (FeG). Jorine has a background in social work and previous experience with living groups and caring for outpatients. Their daughter Nora was born here in Rostock in 2016. The van Dijks enjoy life in the beautiful Hanseatic city at the Baltic Sea with their neighborhood in Evershagen.

Doing good in the community…

Together with Gerrit and Jorine and the people of Evershagen, we as the Free Evangelical Church want to shape their neighborhood and as a church serve the society.

In our work we encounter a lot of social poverty, various problems with addictions and people who are losing touch with the community or have already lost it.

We are convinced that

  • people benefit when they can really co-create instead of only consuming events
  • presence, relationships and friendly socializing serves Evershagen
  • Evershagen longs for a good and trusting community
Kaffee für alle

...through encounters in everyday life

Every Wednesday from 9 – 12 a.m. a street café “Café for Everyone” (“Kaffe für Alle”) takes place in the market square in front of Edeka offering coffee and tea for free with the opportunity to get into conversations. It is important to us that the café is a place of encounters. We would like to advocate more warmth and companionship in Evershagen. The phrase “for Everyone” was carefully chosen as everyone is important, valuable and invited to come!

Every Thursday afternoon from 3.30 – 6 p.m. Gerrit plays soccer with teenagers on the sports grounds. Through this he offers kids that sometimes don’t have it easy in life a safe atmosphere to experience something good and friendly companionship.

Every Thursday from 9 – 11 a.m. Jorine organizes a playgroup together with the community center (ILL) in Evershagen (Maxim-Gorkim-Str. 52).
